Music
St. John provides musical opportunities for all ages, interests and talents:
Joyful Noise Choir (4 yrs-grade 1)
Choir sings every 4-6 weeks. Some of the goals are to introduce good singing voices, learn about “beats” and rhythm, learn certain parts of the liturgy, have fun singing songs about God, and play rhythmic instruments. Children participate in a musical in late January early February. The musical builds confi dence in children, they learn a lot about teamwork and have fun while singing and learning about God. Musicals are about one major biblical story (i.e. Esther) or Christian idea.
New Creation Choir (grades 2-5)
This choir sings at least once a month. The children learn how to read music, find hymns and liturgies in the worship book, and sometimes combine with the older youth choir or adults. The choir participates in the Children’s Musical (January-February) and are the leads for the main drama parts. They can also sing in the Spring youth Musical with the Celebration Singers. Frequently, the Youth musical has a teenage theme with a Christian message (i.e. The Parables).
Celebration Singers (grades 6-12)
Our youth choir spans a huge age range. From September-February this group sings in worship, sometimes with the Worship band, the Adult or New Creation choirs. In the spring, they are the leads for the Youth Musical. The youth musical has a teenage theme with a Christian message (i.e. The Parables).
St. John Choir (post high school-adult)
St. John choir sings approximately 3 out of 4 Sundays. If you are interested in singing but question how much time you have, call and ask, or just try us out! This group has a wide range of repertoire; the anthems usually fit the Sunday theme. We also sing at the Christmas Eve service. This group also goes to sing at some of the Retirement homes in the area. Come and sing for the All Choir Sunday in December (practice begins early November); Christmas Eve (one rehearsal); or Easter choir (2-3 weeks prior).
Youth Handbells (grades 3-7)
This is an introductory hand bell group for youth. There is some flexibility with grade level, but the child MUST be able to READ music. Kids learn how to play both hand bells and hand chimes and learn basic hand bell technique.
Adult Handbells
This is for adults who read music and love to play in an ensemble utilizing hand bells and hand chimes.
Recorder Group
This is a group of four adults who play soprano, alto, tenor and bass recorders. They play in worship 3-4 times a year.
Their repertoire varies from classical to ethnic to popular (for youth programs).
Worship Band
This is a mixed group of musicians (singers, drummers, guitarists, pianists) who help lead worship once/month. If you have an interest in this group and/or a special musical talent that could be helpful, please let us know.
Gospel Group
This is a group of people who enjoy singing of the old hymns of the faith as well as some new gospel arrangements.
Other Instrumental Groups
These people play when called upon for hymn sings, hymn festivals, etc.: brass group; flute group; soloists, etc.
